God's Acre

To our out-of-town family and
friends:
Many of you would like to see the
cemetery where your earliest Clewell family have been laid to rest. The
following are pictures from God's Acre, taken on October 10, 2003.
Please note that there are two
sections to the cemetery, the "old" and the "new." The
cemetery was laid out in 1763 by George Clauss, father-in-law of Elizabeth
Clewell, George Craft Clewell's oldest daughter. Oddly enough, Clauss was the first to be interred in
the cemetery.
Further, those buried in the
"old" section of the cemetery, were interred according to the Moravian
"choir" system. Men were buried in one area and women were buried in
another. Yes, that means a husband was not buried beside his wife. It was
the same manner in which they worshipped, men on one side of the church and
women on the other, a tradition no longer practiced.

the "new" section of the cemetery from the north side of the

Looking toward the
southwest corner. Part of the "old" section of the cemetery is
located in the large green area in the background. Louisa, Franz, and
George are buried near the trees in the background. |

Looking southwest from the
north east corner of the cemetery. The "new" section is located
on the right. Part of the "old" section can be seen on the left. |
 |
Looking directly west from
the center of the cemetery. Traditional Moravian ledgers are the style of
this section of the "old" cemetery. |
 |
Looking south at part of
the "old" cemetery. The flags in the background denote Civil War
veterans. |
 |
Moving further west toward
the oldest part of the cemetery. Louisa's gravestone is the small, gray
spot at the base of the tree in the center. Notice the open
"path" which separates the men's section (on the left) from the
women's. |
 |
Looking south at the
oldest part of the cemetery. Louisa's gravestone is located near the base
of the tree on the left. Broad Street Extension is located on the right,
the western boarder of God's Acre. |
 |
Looking north from the
southern edge of the "old" cemetery. The "new"
cemetery is located in the background. Louisa's gravestone is the large,
gray patch near the center of the photo. Franz's and George's gravestones
are located in the center row, but closer to the trees. Over the
centuries, many of the gravestones have settled below ground level. |
